Practice Area

Ms. Marshlain defends private and public entities, including school districts, cities, counties, and fire districts.  She has experience handling a variety of legal issues, including employment-based claims such as discrimination and wrongful termination as well as claims of: negligence, negligent supervision, negligent hiring and retention, wrongful death, traumatic brain injury, and quadriplegia.   

Before joining Patterson Buchanan, Ms. Marshlain was a law clerk for Snohomish County Superior Court judge David A. Kurtz.  As Judge Kurtz’s law clerk, Ms. Marshlain was responsible for drafting legal memorandum, conducting legal research and advising the court on various issues of both civil and criminal law.  Her job duties also included working closely with jurors during jury trials and acting as a general liaison between legal counsel, the general public, the media and the court.

  • Ms. Marshlain’s article “Non-hazing Injuries to Fraternity and Sorority Members: Should the fraternal association be required to assume a parental role?” was published in the Appalachian Journal of Law in the spring of 2006. This article was recognized as a torts “article of interest” by the Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel.

Representative Cases

  • Brees v. Jefferson County- Federal jury trial following claims of First and Fourth Amendment violations and malicious prosecution against Jefferson County, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and an individually named deputy. (Defense verdict). 
  • Osborn v. Mukilteo School District – Jury trial following negligence claims against the Mukilteo School District. (Favorable verdict).
